U.S. sanctions against the cryptocurrency money laundering network associated with the Sinaloa drug cartel
La Oficina de Control de Activos Extranjeros (OFAC) del Departamento del Tesoro de EE. UU. anunció sanciones contra dos redes de lavado de dinero asociadas al cártel de Sinaloa, que involucran a más de una docena de personas y entidades. Una de las redes está acusada de convertir efectivo de la venta de fentanilo y otras drogas en criptomonedas y transferirlo a miembros de alto rango del cártel de Sinaloa en México.
La OFAC declaró que la red lavaba dinero a través de la recolección de efectivo dentro de Estados Unidos, transferencias de criptomonedas y corredores mexicanos asociados a la facción de "Los Chapitos". "Los Chapitos" es controlada por Iván y Alfredo Guzmán Salazar, los hijos del "Chapo" Guzmán. Las personas sancionadas incluyen a Armando de Jesús Ojeda Avilés, quien es sospechoso de ser el responsable de la red de lavado de dinero, y Jesús González Peñuelas, otro líder de una organización de narcotráfico y lavado de dinero.
La OFAC señaló que la organización recolecta grandes cantidades de efectivo en Estados Unidos, lo cambia por criptomonedas y lo envía de regreso a México. Bajo las sanciones, los activos de las personas y entidades relevantes dentro de Estados Unidos serán congelados, y los ciudadanos estadounidenses
