Ripple Labs warns of quantum threat to blockchain infrastructure

Ripple Labs is preparing the XRP Ledger for potential quantum threats, emphasizing the need for financial infrastructure to adapt to the simultaneous advancements in quantum computing and artificial intelligence. Senior Engineering Director Ayo Akinyele stated that the focus should not be on waiting for Q-Day but on creating infrastructure capable of transitioning to new security mechanisms without disrupting network operations. Akinyele highlighted that moving XRP Ledger to post-quantum cryptography involves more than simply replacing one signature algorithm with another, requiring a more flexible infrastructure, better key management, and clear update mechanisms. He noted that financial systems were not historically designed with quantum computers in mind, and as quantum technology advances, institutions must rethink the protection of transactions, identities, assets, and sensitive data. Quantum technology has already attracted government investment, with IBM and the US Department of Commerce announcing a specialized quantum factory in May 2026, backed by approximately 2000000000 dollars in funding. In June 2026, President Donald Trump signed two executive orders aimed at protecting the country from potential quantum attacks and developing relevant technologies, including a transition to post-quantum cryptography by the end of 2030 for federal structures. Additionally, AI is creating new demands for payment systems, as AI agents are gradually gaining the ability to conduct transactions autonomously. Ripple Labs believes that proactive preparation will provide blockchains with better opportunities for a secure transition, aiming for a conscious and orderly shift rather than a reactive one in response to a crisis. Ripple Labs previously outlined a four-phase strategy for preparing the XRP Ledger for post-quantum cryptography, targeting full transition by 2028.
