Secondo Bloomberg, il Dipartimento del Tesoro degli Stati Uniti ha annunciato sanzioni contro un operatore del cartello della droga di Sinaloa, accusandolo di utilizzare criptovalute per trasferire i proventi del traffico di droga in Messico. L'Office of Foreign Assets Control del Tesoro ha dichiarato che tra i sanzionati figurano Armando de Jesus Ojeda Aviles e diversi suoi associati, che riciclavano i proventi delle vendite di fentanyl, cocaina e metanfetamina per il cartello di Sinaloa.

La rete si affida a corrieri all'interno degli Stati Uniti per riscuotere contanti e trasferisce fondi attraverso indirizzi di valuta digitale. Nell'aprile 2024, un gran giurì federale in Colorado ha incriminato un altro associato di Ojeda, Rodrigo Alarcon Palomares, accusandolo di aver riciclato proventi della droga tramite criptovalute.
