Aave has emerged as a key platform for accepting tokenized gold as collateral for DeFi (Decentralized Finance) loans. With Tether Gold (XAUT) and Paxos Gold (PAXG) entering the lending market, the use of on-chain gold is shifting from storage to collateral utilization.
According to DeFiLlama, as of the 17th, Tether Gold's active market capitalization is $2.882 billion (approximately 4.78 trillion won), with active deposits in DeFi amounting to $233.05 million (approximately 329.8 billion won). Among these, Aave V3 has deposits of $56.98 million (approximately 80.6 billion won), and Aave V4 has deposits of $6.91 million (approximately 9.8 billion won).
Combining both markets, Aave's Tether Gold deposit size is $63.89 million (approximately 90.4 billion won). A significant portion of Tether Gold's total active DeFi deposits is allocated to Aave.
Tether Gold is a tokenized gold product designed to correspond to one fine troy ounce of gold. The Tether Gold FAQ states that this asset was launched in 2020 and describes a structure that represents physical gold as a blockchain token.
Paxos Gold is also classified as an asset in the same category. DeFiLlama reported Paxos Gold's market capitalization at $1.789 billion (approximately 2.5314 trillion won). Paxos issues Paxos Gold, and Aave's governance review document classifies Paxos Gold as a commodity-backed financial product with tokenized claims on physical gold.
The key point of this trend is that gold tokens are transitioning from simple holding assets to collateral assets. We previously reported that the use of tokenized gold as DeFi collateral is still in its early stages. At that time, the issue was that the ratio of actual collateral usage compared to the entire gold token market was low.
This aggregation shows that this initial utilization is converging towards Aave. However, out of Tether Gold's total active market capitalization of $2.882 billion, the active deposits in DeFi are only $233.05 million. While the collateral utilization of gold tokens is increasing, their proportion in the overall market is still limited.
Aave's method of accepting gold tokens differs from that of typical cryptocurrency collateral. Aave's official help page describes the Isolation Mode as a feature that collateralizes new or volatile assets in a limited manner. In this mode, only stablecoins approved by Aave governance can be borrowed.
The Isolation Mode is a mechanism designed to reduce the risk of specific collateral assets spilling over into other markets. Gold tokens are traded on-chain but rely on physical gold storage, issuer trust, proof reports, and price feeds. From the perspective of the lending protocol, it must manage not only the collateral value but also the off-chain trust structure.
Aave governance's proposal to add Tether Gold also follows this framework. The proposal includes placing Tether Gold into the Aave V3 core market while applying the isolation mode, allowing collateral use but restricting the range of borrowed assets. This structure narrows the lending scope considering the characteristics of gold tokens.
The review document for Paxos Gold is in the same context. It states that one Paxos Gold token corresponds to one troy ounce of London Good Delivery gold. Since it is an asset that transfers the claim on physical gold to a token, a separate evaluation of the issuance, storage, and redemption structure is necessary for collateral inclusion.
The tokenized commodity market is heavily focused on gold. DeFiLlama research indicates that Tether Gold and Paxos Gold account for about 95% of the tokenized commodity market. RedStone reported in a 2026 report that tokenized gold has grown sevenfold during the same period.
This figure can be seen as market data indicating that the adoption of tokenized gold is increasing. However, it does not imply the price direction or revenue potential of specific assets. The actual utilization scale may vary depending on gold prices, lending demand, protocol collateral limits, and issuer trust issues.
Industry interpretations view gold tokenization as a convergence point between RWA (Real World Assets) and DeFi. Chainlink has cited real-time transparency and transferability as the core values of gold tokenization, while some research accounts have suggested expansion potential compared to the penetration rate of gold ETFs. However, such evaluations are strongly market outlook-oriented and should be distinguished from actual collateral adoption.
Risk factors also remain. Paxos has stated on its Paxos Gold transparency page that it will release monthly proof reports, with reports issued by KPMG LLP after February 28, 2025. The trustworthiness of gold tokens used as collateral depends on a combination of the issuer, storage institution, price feed, and protocol risk management.
Even though Aave's deposit size has increased, most tokenized gold is still not used as loan collateral. The currently confirmed figures show that on-chain gold is moving from storage assets to utilized assets, but the establishment of DeFi collateral markets depends on the verification process of liquidity, oracles, and proof systems.
