Anthropic is suing the U.S. government, demanding the Pentagon revoke its 'supply chain risk' designation
BlockBeats News, March 9th, according to Reuters, on Monday, Anthropic filed a lawsuit seeking to prevent the Pentagon from placing it on a national security blacklist, escalating the AI lab's high-stakes standoff with the U.S. military over restrictions on its technology use.
The Pentagon officially classified Anthropic as a supply chain risk last Thursday, restricting a technology reportedly being used in Iranian military operations, according to sources. Anthropic argued in the lawsuit that this designation was unlawful and violated its freedom of speech and due process rights. The documents filed with the California federal court request the judge to revoke the designation and prevent federal agencies from enforcing it.
Anthropic stated: "These actions are unprecedented and unlawful. The Constitution does not allow the government to wield its immense power to punish a protected speech of a company."
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth last week classified Anthropic as a national security supply chain risk after Anthropic refused to remove restrictions on its AI for autonomous weapons or domestic surveillance. This designation poses a significant threat to Anthropic's government business, with potential implications for how other AI companies negotiate restrictions on the military use of their technology.
However, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei clarified on Thursday that the designation is "narrow in scope," and the company can still use its tools in projects unrelated to the Pentagon.
