Coinbase Discusses Securing Bitcoin Against Quantum Computers
Coinbase discusses potential solutions for securing Bitcoin against quantum computers. The exchange, which holds about 5% of all existing BTC in custody, warns that the migration to post-quantum security could take years and calls for early preparations. Currently, there is no known quantum computer capable of breaking Bitcoin's digital signatures, but adapting the network and wallets may take time. Users may need to move their Bitcoin to new addresses that are resistant to quantum attacks. This may require wallet software updates and sending coins to a new, quantum-safe address. For holders who keep their Bitcoin at a cryptocurrency exchange, the exchange will be able to handle the technical transition. There are no definitive rules or deadlines for old wallets yet, and how the transition will work is still not established. Based on current proposals, holders do not need to move their Bitcoin immediately.
