Price Manipulation Attacks Reach a Peak in 2026

Price manipulation attacks have reached a record high in 2026, accounting for one in every eight recorded hacks. TRM Labs reported 32 exploits of this kind so far this year, highlighting how the temporary distortion of a token's value can lead to million-dollar losses. The strategy focuses on assets with low liquidity, where attackers buy the token to artificially inflate its price and then use it as collateral in lending protocols. This allows them to withdraw more liquid crypto assets, but once the manipulated token's price falls, the protocol is left with insufficient collateral. In 2022, these attacks represented one in every 17 incidents. The total value locked in cryptocurrency-backed lending protocols has grown by 56% in two years, approaching $5 billion, with outstanding loans of approximately $2.9 billion and over 570 protocols in operation. This indicates that the problem depends not only on the security of smart contracts but also on oracles, market liquidity, and valuation parameters. To mitigate risks, protocols can limit the use of illiquid tokens as collateral and activate protective mechanisms against anomalous movements.
