Venture Capital Firm USV Announces $900 Million New Fund to Increase Investments in AI and Robotics
On October 9, venture capital firm Union Square Ventures (USV) announced the launch of a new fund totaling $900 million, focusing on supporting innovative startups in large markets driven by technological transformation. USV stated that the construction of artificial intelligence infrastructure is accelerating, with AI tools enabling entrepreneurs to turn ideas into actual products within days and deploy AI teams at lower costs, leading to intensified product competition. To address this, USV has expanded its investment team, adding Michael Mignano, co-founder of Anchor, as a general partner, Jared Hecht, co-founder of GroupMe, as a venture partner, and Scott Belsky, co-founder of Behance and former Chief Product Officer at Adobe, as a product advisor partner.
Previously, USV's core fund was $275 million, and the new fund represents a significant expansion. The firm indicated that AI has lowered the barriers to product development while increasing the financing demand, round sizes, and valuations of high-quality startups, necessitating more capital to lead more funding rounds, extend support cycles for portfolio companies, and expand into capital-intensive fields such as robotics, manufacturing, and energy. However, USV plans to maintain a similar number of investment projects as in previous funds, continuing to focus on investment philosophy, particularly examining the business model, team, and product of companies.
In terms of investment strategy, USV has proposed four core directions: fundamentally reshaping existing markets using AI rather than merely enhancing the efficiency of traditional businesses; acquiring previously inaccessible offline data through physical intelligence and AI, investing in related software, robotics, manufacturing, and sensor networks; supporting intelligent products that can achieve better coordination of interests in trust, security, memory capacity, and cost; and increasing investments in the energy sector by integrating energy investments made through a special fund since 2021 into the core fund. USV stated that its investment logic continues the philosophy established in 2004 around internet infrastructure, now focusing on artificial intelligence and smart technologies, seeking companies that are likely to reshape large markets through these advancements.
