Anthropic Prevents Multiple Attempts at Biological Weapons Research

Anthropic has stated that it has prevented multiple attempts this year by scientists to use its technology for potentially aiding biological weapons research. The company cited five cases where the involved parties circumvented control measures and obscured the research objectives to evade safety protections. Anthropic hopes to spark discussions within the AI industry and among governments regarding emerging biological risks and response strategies by sharing these cases. One case involved a researcher from an unsupported region using Claude to plan experiments related to avian influenza. Anthropic noted that its safety filtering mechanisms restricted this research to the least capable models and emphasized that it could not determine whether the scientist intended to cause harm, as the information needed to develop biological weapons could also be used for vaccine development. The company has banned the accounts mentioned in the report but did not disclose the institution of the researcher or the country where the incidents occurred.
