Banco Santander, Spain's largest bank, has disclosed a 4.3 million dollar investment in Bitcoin through a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The Madrid-based bank acquired 129,615 shares via BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust. This move reflects a growing trend among traditional institutions seeking exposure to Bitcoin. Over the past year, Santander's digital bank, Openbank, has enabled customers to purchase Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, adopting a more favorable stance towards marketing digital assets. BlackRock's Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) allows investors to gain exposure to Bitcoin without directly owning or storing the cryptocurrency. The shares are traded on a stock exchange and can be easily purchased through brokerage accounts. BlackRock's IBIT is the leading crypto ETF, with 46.9 billion dollars in assets under management, making it the most successful fund in terms of inflows. Following the SEC's approval of multiple ETFs in 2024, several major institutions have also invested in Bitcoin through these funds, attracting new capital to the market. Currently, U.S. Bitcoin funds manage over 83 billion dollars in assets.
