Blockade of Ukrainian Ports May Lead to 30% Increase in Agricultural Prices
The prolonged blockade of Ukrainian ports could lead to a rise in global agricultural prices by up to 30%. If the situation continues for several more months, as much as 30 million tons of Ukrainian agricultural products may not reach international markets, said Taras Vysotsky, the Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food. He noted that if the export restrictions from Ukraine persist, it will have a significant impact on global prices. In 2022, the average increase in food prices was 24.5%, with prices for certain categories doubling. However, the halt in exports from Ukraine is not exerting significant pressure on the global market due to the active harvest in Northern Hemisphere countries and sufficient agricultural supply. Vysotsky emphasized that the situation is different from 2022 when exports were blocked in March, and markets relied on reserves. With a prolonged blockade of Ukrainian ports, the global market could miss out on up to 30 million tons of agricultural products, which is important from both economic and humanitarian perspectives for importing countries. Changes in global or domestic grain prices do not automatically translate to lower bread and other product prices in Ukraine due to a temporary lag between raw material costs and final prices. Next year, Ukraine's production of grains and oilseeds could be halved to 40 million tons due to potential reductions in planting areas.
