Buterin Rearranges Ethereum Roadmap Priorities
The Ethereum (ETH) roadmap has seen an increased emphasis on quantum safety, privacy, and protocol lightweighting. Vitalik Buterin revealed on August 10 that the order of some tasks has changed compared to the 2023 roadmap and the current strawman. The priority for quantum safety has been raised, while the verifiable delay function (VDF) and several EVM improvement tasks have been pushed to a lower priority. The new roadmap includes strong privacy, scalability in a post-quantum environment, specification lightweighting, and native rollups. The privacy section encompasses elements such as kid nonce, recent root, and parts of FOCIL, indicating a direction to address these in the protocol design phase. Discussions on scalability are premised on a post-quantum environment, with Buterin mentioning Linsphinx signatures and the zkzk framework. Protocol lightweighting aims to enable formal verification through modern AI tools. It was noted that native rollups are not mature in 2023, and the future of EVM may involve exposing the instruction set architecture (ISA) to users. This update represents a rearrangement of development priorities, with additional research and validation needed for actual implementation.
