ChatGPT and Roblox Under EU Scrutiny Due to 45 Million Users

Chatbot ChatGPT and gaming platform Roblox Corp. will come under increased scrutiny from the European Union due to exceeding 45 million monthly active users. The European Commission plans to grant them the status of "very large online platforms" (VLOP) under the Digital Services Act, with an official decision expected in August. The VLOP status imposes strict obligations: companies must regularly submit transparency reports, develop risk mitigation plans, and pay an annual fee. Violations can result in fines of up to 6% of annual global revenue. The law aims to protect minors online and combat harmful content. Roblox, previously criticized for child safety, is tightening controls over interactions with minors. The company is also expanding its advertising direction, which will require compliance with new DSA marketing transparency requirements for children. The application of DSA norms has caused discontent within the U.S. presidential administration, which accused the EU of censorship. The European Commission has already imposed significant fines, including 550 million euros on Alibaba for inadequate risk assessment.
