CME Group plans to launch futures and options contracts linked to professional and collegiate sports events, collaborating with emerging index provider FutureSports, which will provide the underlying support for these new tools. The first sports futures contracts will be cash-settled, expiring monthly and quarterly, and are expected to begin trading as early as this summer, pending regulatory approval. CME CEO Terry Duffy stated that this initiative aims to introduce price discovery mechanisms and risk management standards to the sports industry, and if approved, it will be a first for the sports sector.
