Como 1907 Limits Heading in Youth Football to Protect Health

The Como 1907 club in Italy has decided to limit heading in the practices of its youth teams to prevent long-term brain injuries. This measure, driven by Raphael Varane, the 2018 World Cup champion, will be applied until a certain age and will be gradually integrated. Varane, who suffered two concussions at the age of 16, has researched the effects of aerial play on players' health, highlighting that repeated trauma can lead to neurodegenerative diseases. The restriction is already in effect: players in the Under-10 category are prohibited from heading the ball, while those in the Under-11 category will be allowed to start practicing with a rubber ball at the end of the season. Additionally, corners must be executed along the ground, and throw-ins must be directed to teammates' feet. As players advance in categories, they will be able to work on heading progressively, with a limited number per session and avoiding the use of overly inflated balls.
