DeepSeek released the V4.1-Flash-1017 model on October 17, significantly enhancing its capabilities, likely related to Astra's output distillation. Multiple insiders revealed that DeepSeek extensively used data from OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra during the training process. The new version performs particularly well in browser operation tasks, scoring 75.0 in a test of 180 real web tasks, up from 70.9, approaching Astra's score of 77.9. The model's cost per query is $0.22, while Astra's is as high as $10.77, nearly a 49-fold difference. Previously, Claude was the main target for domestic AI companies' distillation efforts, but due to tightened protections from Anthropic, domestic labs have shifted their focus to Astra. DeepSeek's founder, Liang Wenfeng, was initially reluctant to rely on distillation but ultimately compromised under competitive pressure.
