EigenLayer Discusses Standardization of RETIRE Framework for Ending Re-staking

By: rootdata|2026/07/25 12:24:13

The draft ELIP-018 is being discussed at the Ethereum re-staking infrastructure forum EigenLayer, with a focus on the RETIRE framework that aims to terminate re-staking assets in an 'irreversible' manner. This proposal seeks to establish a procedure for completely ending specific re-staking positions. It means allowing participants to clearly conclude their responsibilities and exposures without touching on slashing risks. Re-staking is a structure that reuses deposited assets to protect additional services, enhancing capital efficiency and security linkage. However, as stakers, operators, AVS, slashing rules, and withdrawal paths intertwine, the timing of termination and the scope of responsibilities can become unclear. The RETIRE framework focuses on 'permanent termination' and aims to minimize situations where the active status within the system is ambiguous by considering a chosen path as a final exit. From a market perspective, exit design is also crucial. If the termination process is unclear, users may hesitate to participate due to concerns about penalties, and if the exit is loose, worries about security weakening increase. ELIP-018 is interpreted as an attempt to find a balance between the scalability of re-staking and user protection. The current discussions are in the draft stage, and the EigenLayer community needs to review the necessity of RETIRE and any potential conflicts with existing rules.
