The two main opposition parties in El Salvador have officially nominated their candidates for the presidential election in February 2027: the National Republican Alliance (ARENA) has put forward former lawmaker Maytee Iraheta, while the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN) has nominated doctor and union leader Rafael Aguirre. Both candidates oppose Bukele's Bitcoin strategy, viewing it as a financial failure. Bukele currently enjoys a 94% approval rating, and his Nuevas Ideas party has completed its nomination process. El Salvador canceled Bitcoin's legal tender status in February 2025 after reaching a $1.4 billion loan agreement with the IMF, with the US dollar reinstated as the sole official currency. However, the government continues to maintain a plan to purchase approximately one Bitcoin daily, holding about 7,730 BTC as of July 27.
