Ethereum Researchers Propose Overhaul of Staking Entry to Support Quantum Resistance

By: www.coindesk.com|2026/08/26 13:34:42

Ethereum researchers have put forward a new proposal to restructure the deposit contract used for validators to join the network, aiming to defend against future quantum computing attacks. This proposal seeks to upgrade the Ethereum validator registration mechanism by adding a cryptographic algorithm switching feature that supports quantum-resistant signature schemes. Currently, Ethereum validators use BLS signatures to verify transactions, but the elliptic curve cryptography that this scheme relies on may be vulnerable to quantum computer attacks. The deposit contract serves as the entry point for users to stake ETH and become validators, with approximately 42.4 million ETH currently staked, valued at around $10.4 billion, all protected by existing BLS verification keys. Researchers point out that the current contract has hardcoded the size of BLS keys, meaning that if the community establishes a new quantum-resistant signature standard in the future, Ethereum will not be able to support it directly. The proposal is still in the early draft stage and has not yet been formally numbered, although some maintainers suggest it be numbered EIP-8394. If approved, the new version of the deposit contract will allow different cryptographic schemes to coexist and will differentiate various signature systems through a tagging mechanism: BLS signatures will be marked as 0, while future quantum-resistant schemes can use new tags.
