The Federal Reserve noted in the minutes of its meeting released on July 9 that the boom in AI investment is one of the three major forces driving inflation, alongside the Middle East conflict and tariffs. Fed officials generally believe that if inflation remains persistently high, interest rates will have to be raised; however, if price pressures ease quickly, rates may be kept unchanged. The minutes indicate that officials' concerns about the inflation outlook have increased, believing that strong business investment driven by AI development could sustain price pressures. Several participants mentioned that price pressures have become more widespread, with many goods and services experiencing significant increases.
