Federal Reserve Plans to Raise Regulatory Thresholds for Large Banks

The Federal Reserve is formulating a plan to raise the asset threshold that triggers stricter regulation for large banks, aiming to reduce the regulatory burden on some lending institutions and potentially drive industry consolidation. The Fed is expected to soon propose adjustments to the thresholds for stress tests, liquidity, capital, and other stricter regulatory rules that banks must adhere to, reflecting inflation and economic growth factors. These adjustment proposals are anticipated to be put forward later this year. Current rules stipulate that when a bank's assets reach $100 billion, regulatory requirements become more stringent; further increases in regulatory requirements occur at $250 billion and $700 billion. Lending institutions have indicated that the thresholds set in 2019 have not kept pace with economic developments, resulting in increasingly stringent regulations for banks that exceed the actual risks they pose.
