The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has issued a warning about a massive identity theft campaign targeting bitcoin and cryptocurrency service companies, taking advantage of the expiration of the transitional period for the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation. Scammers are sending emails requesting urgent fraudulent payments for a supposed expedited approval of licenses or demanding confidential corporate data. They are unlawfully using the name and logo of ESMA to deceive operators and executives. The June 30 deadline marked the end of the temporary licensing period, increasing pressure on platforms. Although the attack focuses on companies, it also poses a risk to end users, as criminals may attempt to divert funds to addresses controlled by them. ESMA has identified several fraudulent emails and has reminded that it does not request money transfers or personal data through unsolicited emails. The current situation raises concerns about cybersecurity and the stability of digital currency service providers in the eurozone.
