Google Disbands AlphaFold Team, Focus Shifts to Gemini and Scientific Agents

Google DeepMind has disbanded the original AlphaFold team. Over the past year, most of the authors of its papers have been reassigned to projects such as Gemini, enzyme design, nuclear fusion, and genomics, with nearly a quarter of the full-time authors leaving the company. AlphaFold, which can predict the three-dimensional structure of proteins, helped Demis Hassabis and John Jumper secure the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and represents DeepMind's previous focus on tackling scientific challenges. DeepMind now aims to create a general scientific assistant through Gemini to help researchers accomplish more work and gradually automate parts of the research process. In June of this year, Jumper announced his departure to join Anthropic, and core AlphaFold members Jonas Adler and Alexander Pritzel will also follow suit. The results of AlphaFold are still being utilized by Isomorphic Labs, a subsidiary of Alphabet, for drug development.
