Grayscale Predicts Bitcoin Will Benefit from Debasement Trade
Grayscale's crypto research team states that the debasement trade will benefit bitcoin as the U.S. government debases its currency, leading cash to flow into digital assets. The firm's head of research, Zach Pandl, noted that unchecked government debt growth undermines fiat currencies' credibility, prompting investors to seek alternative stores of value like bitcoin. The debasement trade involves buying assets to hedge against currency devaluation. Last year, this trade supported bitcoin's rise, but momentum slowed after October as traders shifted focus to AI-related stocks. Recently, bitcoin gained from the U.S. Treasury's announcement to double its liquidity-support buyback operations, negatively impacting the dollar while benefiting non-yielding assets. The note highlighted that the need for buybacks indicates rising government debt costs, with the Treasury unable to address structural deficits. Last week, the Treasury reported U.S. public debt surpassed 40 trillion dollars for the first time. As debt and interest payments increase, the government faces pressure to raise taxes, cut spending, or issue more debt. Bitcoin advocates believe the likely outcome is an expanded dollar supply, detrimental to the dollar but favorable for scarce assets like bitcoin. Following a surge last week, the dollar experienced its worst week in August, trading at a three-month low. Bitcoin was priced at 77493 dollars on Friday afternoon in New York, after reaching a weekly high of 81281 dollars, and has increased over 20% in the past 30 days.
