How to Have Internet Abroad Without Spending Hundreds of Dollars: The Difference Between eSIM and Roaming
Traveling without internet can become a problem, especially when you need to consult a map, request transportation, communicate with someone, or look up information on the spot. While some plans can reach hundreds of dollars in unexpected charges, there are alternatives to keep your phone connected without necessarily incurring those costs.
Among the most well-known options are international roaming and data eSIMs. Although they are often mentioned as if they were equivalent services, they serve different functions. One is linked to the possibility of using your regular line outside the country, while the other allows you to digitally add a new data plan to your device.
For those traveling from Argentina abroad, knowing this difference before boarding the plane can help avoid surprises on the bill. It is also advisable to check the compatibility of the phone, the coverage of the destination, the amount of available data, and whether the chosen plan allows sharing internet with other devices.
Key Differences Between International Roaming and a Data eSIM
International roaming allows a phone to remain connected when its user is outside the usual coverage area of their company. To make this possible, operators maintain agreements with telecommunications companies in other countries. This way, the phone can connect to a foreign network and continue providing mobile data, calls, and messages.
The point to consider is the costs. Depending on the company, the destination, and the contracted plan, browsing via roaming can incur additional charges. Some companies offer specific packages for travelers that reduce these costs, although the conditions vary by operator.
The eSIM, on the other hand, is a SIM card embedded directly in the phone. There is no need to insert a physical card: the user can contract a data plan from a compatible provider and activate it via a QR code or from an app, depending on the chosen service.
This allows for an additional data line while keeping the regular SIM. One of the most practical advantages is that you can maintain your WhatsApp number, even when mobile data starts functioning through the eSIM.
Another difference is flexibility. An eSIM can be contracted for a specific country or for an entire region. For someone traveling through several European destinations, for example, there are packages that cover dozens of countries without needing to buy a different card every time they cross a border.
However, not all phones are compatible with this technology. Before purchasing an eSIM, it is essential to verify that the model supports it. It is also advisable to check which networks the plan supports and which countries are included.
There are different companies that sell eSIMs for travelers. Among the options analyzed by Mochileros de Viaje are Holafly, Airalo, Maya Mobile, Byte eSIM, eTravel SIM, SIM Local, and Revolut, with differences in coverage, data amounts, duration, and prices. Regardless of which one is chosen, there are some steps to follow before traveling:
- Check the phone's compatibility with eSIM
- Ensure the destination is included in the contracted package
- Verify how many gigabytes the plan offers and for how many days
- Purchase and install the eSIM before the trip, preferably connected to a Wi-Fi network
- Save the QR code or activation instructions
- Keep the new line deactivated until reaching the destination, if the provider indicates so
- Once abroad, select the eSIM as the mobile data source
- Check the data roaming settings for the corresponding line
The installation via QR code is usually done from the phone's settings, in the mobile data or connections section, and not necessarily from the device's conventional camera. The exact procedure varies by manufacturer and provider.
Also, pay attention to a detail that might go unnoticed: having unlimited data does not always mean unlimited speed. Some services reduce speed after reaching a certain daily consumption, even if the user still has internet access.
Therefore, before contracting, it is advisable to look beyond the initial price. Coverage, duration, speed, the possibility of sharing data, and included countries can make two seemingly similar plans have very different experiences.
