India Approves $13.3 Billion Budget for Semiconductors

India has approved a budget of $13.3 billion (approximately 18.82 trillion won) to expand its semiconductor design and manufacturing ecosystem. The cabinet approved Semicon 2.0 on July 15, announcing a total budget of 1.275 trillion rupees. Semicon 2.0 consists of six pillars: design, equipment and materials, fab expansion, ATMP and OSAT, research and development, and talent cultivation. The Indian government has approved 12 manufacturing projects and 24 semiconductor design projects under the existing Semicon 1.0 framework. Semiconductor manufacturing is closely related to power stability, and with the increasing demand for large fabs, AI servers, and data centers, power supply capacity becomes part of industrial competitiveness. The nuclear power sector is progressing under separate laws and roadmaps, with 24 nuclear power plants commercially operational as of February 11, totaling an installed capacity of 8,780 MW. The government aims to achieve a nuclear power capacity of 100 GW by 2047. While private sector participation in nuclear power has been allowed, approval for individual projects requires time. Currently, 13 reactors are in construction or commissioning stages, with 4 having commenced commercial operations. India aims to have at least 5 small modular reactors operational by 2033.
