Japan's 10-Year Government Bond Yield Rises to 3.075%, Highest Since 1996
Japan's bond market reopened after a three-day holiday, with the 10-year government bond yield rising by 10 basis points to 3.075%, marking the highest level since August 1996. The 5-year yield increased by approximately 9.5 basis points to 2.37%, while the 30-year yield rose to 4.134%. This round of global bond market sell-off was influenced by a rebound in oil prices, stronger-than-expected U.S. PMI data, and weak demand in the $70 billion 5-year U.S. Treasury auction. The 5-year U.S. Treasury yield has surpassed 5%, and the 10-year U.S. government bond yield has reached a nearly 19-year high, prompting a repricing of global long-term borrowing costs. The Bank of Japan raised its benchmark interest rate last Friday and hinted at the possibility of further tightening monetary policy, without specifying the pace of future actions. The Japanese government is considering raising its medium-term defense budget target to 3.5% of GDP, heightening market concerns over fiscal expansion and rising debt financing costs. Analysts believe that the continued rise in Japanese government bond yields may lead to adjustments in arbitrage trades relying on low-cost yen financing, potentially exacerbating fluctuations in global asset prices.
