Jim Cramer Says 30-Year Treasury Yield at 5.3% Drives Stock Prices
Jim Cramer states the 30-year Treasury yield, currently near 5.3%, is the primary factor influencing stock prices, overshadowing company fundamentals. He highlights that this yield is impacting housing, borrowing costs, and equity valuations. Cramer recalls a lesson from his time at Goldman Sachs, where he was advised to focus on long bonds instead of company fundamentals. He argues that a government-backed yield of 5.3% offers a safer investment alternative to stocks, pressuring capital-intensive sectors like airlines to compete for funding. Cramer emphasizes, 'The long bond, the 30-year Treasury, is in charge of everything.' He notes that higher long-term rates are directly affecting the housing market, with mortgage rates exceeding 7%, which discourages new listings and prices out potential buyers. The housing sector's sensitivity to rate changes impacts various parts of the economy, including materials, wages, and retail spending. Cramer criticizes the scale of Treasury issuance, pointing out that approximately 4.5 trillion dollars in long bonds are outstanding, which he believes is too large for the government's buyback program to effectively influence yields. He also raises concerns about proposed stimulus checks increasing the deficit. Cramer advises investors over 50 that Treasuries now outperform lower-yielding stocks, while younger investors can still consider riskier growth stocks. He concludes that elevated oil prices and Treasury yields will continue to dictate which sectors are most affected, with airlines being particularly vulnerable.
