LMAX Explores Sale or IPO, Valuation Could Reach $5 Billion

The institutional crypto trading platform LMAX Group is collaborating with Morgan Stanley and Stifel's investment bank KBW to evaluate strategic options, including a sale, SPAC merger, or listing in the U.S. or Europe, with a valuation potentially reaching $5 billion. A Nasdaq listing is the preferred option, but the company is not in a hurry to proceed, as its core forex business can hedge against the current downturn in the crypto market. LMAX is headquartered in London and regulated by the UK's Financial Conduct Authority, providing forex and digital asset trading venues for banks, brokers, hedge funds, and asset management firms. In 2021, private equity firm J.C. Flowers acquired a 30% stake for $300 million, valuing the company at around $1 billion at that time. In January of this year, Ripple made a strategic investment of $150 million in LMAX to promote the institutional adoption of the RLUSD stablecoin.
