New Bitcoin study finds liquidation signals unreliable for predicting crashes

A new arXiv preprint analyzing seven major Bitcoin crashes reveals that warning signals vary among price, leverage, and order flow across events. The study identified a common clue: taker order-flow variance tightened before each crash, but this signal was not reliable for predicting individual events. The paper, submitted by Ramon Marc Garcia Seuma on July 29, 2026, has not been peer-reviewed and examined Binance's USD-margined BTCUSDT perpetual market from May 2022 to October 2025, utilizing one-minute price bars and five-minute data on open interest and trader positioning.

The study suggests that markets nearing critical transitions recover more slowly from disturbances, indicating a statistical memory in price or market structure. Price showed a significant signal in five of the seven crashes, but not during the February and October 2025 events linked to sudden tariff news. The author proposes that cascades resulting from absorbed market stress may leave a price signal, while abrupt shocks may not.

An out-of-sample test indicated that October 2025 showed signals in leverage and order flow instead of price, while the August 2024 cascade displayed the opposite pattern. No variable consistently indicated a critical-slowing-down signature across all events.

An inverse order-flow pattern was noted, with falling variance in the taker buy/sell ratio before every crash analyzed. However, this pattern does not reliably predict specific crashes. The sample's limitations include incomplete data for some 2022 events and reliance on proxies for public leverage and flow measures. A subsequent liquidation event on June 25, 2026, resulted in approximately 1 billion dollars in forced closures, highlighting the unpredictability of market movements.
