Norway plans to impose stricter regulations on smart glasses and is considering a ban on facial recognition in public spaces, according to Digitalisation Minister Karianne Tung on August 25. Tung stated that artificial intelligence is increasingly integrated with cameras and microphones in devices like glasses and earbuds, emphasizing the need to prevent their use for monitoring individuals in public. An expert group will be appointed to advise the government on consumer protection regarding this technology, while organizations are encouraged to create their own guidelines during the rule-making process. No specific timeline has been established for these regulations. Finn Lützow-Holm Myrstad, head of digital policy at the Norwegian Consumer Council, supported the initiative but urged retailers to halt sales of smart glasses until the legislation is finalized. Concerns about potential misuse of the technology have been highlighted, especially following incidents where women were secretly filmed using Ray-Ban Meta glasses. The ACLU and 75 other organizations have called for Meta to abandon facial recognition features, and investigations into the technology's implications are ongoing. Norway's potential legislation would position it among the first countries to specifically regulate smart glasses.
