Oil Prices Approach $100, Complicating Rate Decisions for the Fed, BOE, and BOJ

International oil prices are nearing $100 per barrel, putting the monetary policies of the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed), Bank of England (BOE), and Bank of Japan (BOJ) to the test. The market expects a freeze on interest rates this week, but attention is focused on the possibility of additional tightening in September if energy-driven inflation persists. The Fed will decide on interest rates on the 29th, with the rising oil prices becoming a key variable affecting inflation forecasts. Bloomberg reports that market interest is concentrated on how major central banks will assess the risks of energy-driven inflation. The European Central Bank (ECB) is also keeping the possibility of further rate hikes open, and financial markets reflect the likelihood that G7 central banks will begin tightening from September. While the Fed is likely to keep rates on hold, it is expected to maintain a vigilant stance on inflation and leave the door open for a rate hike in September. Wall Street sees a 30% probability of a rate increase, and despite a recent slowdown in the Consumer Price Index (CPI), rising oil prices are emerging as a new inflation risk. This week, the U.S. will also release its Q2 GDP and Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index. In Japan, the Tokyo Consumer Price Index (CPI), industrial production, and retail sales are set to be published.
