Stablecoins Worth $320 Billion Included in Jackson Hole Symposium Agenda
Digital assets have been officially included in the agenda of this year's Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium. The discussions will focus on the impact of stablecoins, tokenized finance, and payment innovations on monetary policy and the banking system. The Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City will host the Jackson Hole Symposium from August 27 to 29, 2026, with the theme 'Financial Innovation: Implications for Payments and Policy.' On the 28th, topics such as 'Financial Innovation and the International Monetary System,' 'Tokenized Financial Innovations,' and 'International Experiences in Payment Innovations' will be addressed, followed by discussions on 'Financial Innovation and the Future of Banking' on the 29th. The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) reported on June 23 that the market capitalization of stablecoins was approximately $320 billion as of May 2026. The BIS explained that 99.4% of fiat-backed stablecoins are pegged to the US dollar. Stablecoins are typically designed to maintain their value based on reserve assets such as dollars or government bonds, and as their issuance increases, discussions on reserve asset management, the short-term funding market, and bank deposits will also take place. The Federal Reserve views stablecoins as a variable in the implementation of monetary policy, and the Genius Act, which includes a regulatory framework for payment stablecoins, is expected to pass in July 2025. Although this symposium is not a meeting for determining interest rates, statements from the Fed Chair are interpreted as signals for the direction of monetary policy.
