Temporary Rentals in Dollars: How to Book Securely on Platforms
Finding an apartment for vacation is becoming easier thanks to international apps that offer thousands of properties in different destinations. However, the ease of booking also requires attention to potential scams, unclear conditions, and additional costs that can alter the final price.
Platforms like Airbnb and Booking.com have mechanisms to support transactions, but these lose effectiveness when the user negotiates directly with the owner. Additionally, the method chosen to cancel expenses in dollars from Argentina can have its own impact.
Travelers should check when the charge is made, in what currency it is processed, and what the refund conditions are.
The main recommendation is to keep the entire operation within the platform used, including from the first messages with the host to the payment for the stay. If the owner requests to continue the conversation via WhatsApp, a personal email, or any other channel, it is best to avoid sending sensitive information or agreeing to conditions different from those originally published.
The same applies to payments, as it is not advisable to make direct bank transfers, cash deposits, or use external links sent privately to obtain a supposedly cheaper rate. Before choosing a property, several elements should also be reviewed:
- Read reviews from previous guests
- Verify the reputation and longevity of the host
- Compare the photographs with the published comments
- Pay special attention to observations about cleanliness, location, and communication
- Be wary of prices that are much lower than the average in the area
- Check the cancellation conditions before confirming
- Review additional cleaning fees, local taxes, or security deposits
On Airbnb, it can be helpful to look for Superhosts, but on Booking, it is important to prioritize establishments with a considerable number of reviews and a high rating. Once the operation is completed, it is necessary to keep the confirmation, the receipt, and the complete details of the amount paid to have a backup in case of any issues.
When the booking is processed in dollars, the best option for those who already have dollarized funds is to pay that balance directly with available money in a dollar savings account. For this, the operation should be done normally with a credit card, and when the period closes, the accommodation will appear within the expenses expressed in foreign currency. The general procedure is:
- Make the booking only from the official platform
- Wait for the closing and verify the exact amount recorded in dollars
- Request Stop Debit if there is an automatic debit from a peso account
- Access home banking before the due date
- Manually cancel the foreign balance with funds from the dollar savings account
- Pay separately for the corresponding expenses in pesos
- Later check that any perception calculated on that part of the statement has been eliminated or compensated according to the bank's mechanism
Those who do not want to use their own savings can buy MEP dollars and then use those funds to pay for the expense. There are also differences depending on the platform, as Airbnb centralizes payments within its own system, but Booking can offer both online payment and modalities where the accommodation charges directly upon arrival. This last option requires special attention to the currency and the informed conditions, as an amount that appears converted to pesos during the search will not necessarily be the same amount that must be paid months later.
