The Dark Horse of AI Payments: Coinbase May Have Given Agents a Wallet

In the AI payments arena, most people are focused on traditional payment giants like Visa, Mastercard, and Stripe, or AI platforms like OpenAI and Google.

However, there is a set of data worth noting. According to disclosures from Coinbase during its quarterly calls in 2026, over 90% of on-chain Agent transactions occurred on the Base chain, 99% of Agent business transactions were settled in USDC, and over 97% of on-chain Agent transactions utilized the x402 protocol. The trading volume of stablecoins on the Base chain accounted for 62% of the entire industry’s stablecoin transactions.

In other words, while everyone is debating which track will win between card payments and stablecoins, and which protocol will become the standard, a cryptocurrency exchange has quietly become the largest actual operator of Agent payments.

This position is not held by Visa, Mastercard, or Stripe, but by Coinbase.

Coinbase is Not Creating a Payment Protocol, but "Giving Agents a Wallet"

On February 11, 2026, Coinbase launched Agentic Wallets through its developer platform, a wallet infrastructure specifically designed for AI Agents.

Prior to this, the infrastructure for Agent payments was either APIs for developers or payment gateways for users. Agents did not have their own "accounts". They had to spend money either through human accounts or indirectly through a platform’s interface.

Agentic Wallets enable Agents to become entities that can hold assets. An Agent can have its own wallet address and autonomously hold funds, initiate transfers, execute transactions, and earn income under preset permissions and risk control constraints. It no longer needs a human account as an intermediary.

This infrastructure is assembled from several components. At the base is the Agent Kit, an open-source toolkit launched by Coinbase in 2025, allowing developers to integrate wallet functionalities into any Agent system. In the middle is the x402 protocol, which activates the HTTP 402 status code for machine-to-machine payment standards and has processed over 50 million transactions. At the top are non-custodial wallets and security suites, deeply integrated with the Coinbase Developer Platform.

These three components together form a complete "Agent financial account".

This positioning is fundamentally different from what Visa and Stripe are doing. Visa is enabling Agents to access existing card payment networks, while Stripe is allowing Agents to connect to existing merchant payment systems. Coinbase is providing Agents with a brand new financial identity that belongs to them.

Why Agents Need Their Own "Wallet" Instead of Using Human Cards

This question deserves elaboration. When Agents buy things for people, why can’t they just use human credit cards? Why do they need their own wallets?

The answer relates to a fundamental characteristic of Agent payments: many transactions between Agents are micro, high-frequency, automated payment flows between machines.

An Agent calling another Agent’s API pays one-thousandth of a cent for a data query. If this payment were made using a human credit card, there would be several issues. First is the transaction fee; card payment fees are a fixed percentage plus a minimum amount, making the fee for a one-thousandth of a cent payment several orders of magnitude higher than the principal. Second is authorization; human credit cards require cardholder confirmation for each payment, and Agents cannot ask a person for confirmation for every micro payment. Third is attribution; human credit cards are tied to human identities, and it is difficult to trace which Agent, platform, or person is responsible for an Agent-to-Agent payment when using a human card.

Giving Agents their own wallets alleviates all three issues. The funds in the wallet are stablecoins, and the transfer costs are extremely low. The spending permissions of the wallet are controlled by code-level strategies, eliminating the need for manual authorization for each transaction. The wallet address serves as an independent on-chain identity, making transaction attribution and tracing clear.

This is why Coinbase’s data shows that "99% of Agent business transactions are settled in USDC". It’s not that USDC is better than credit cards, but rather that for Agent-to-Agent payment scenarios, stablecoins combined with on-chain wallets are inherently more suitable due to their technical characteristics.

Coinbase’s Complete Ecosystem: Wallets, Chains, and Protocols All Under Its Control

Coinbase’s layout in Agent payments is more complete than it appears on the surface.

It has Base, a Layer 2 network it operates. It has Agentic Wallets, a wallet infrastructure for Agents. It has x402, a machine-to-machine payment protocol. It also has native wrapped assets like cbBTC and cbETH.

Wallets, chains, protocols, and assets—these four components are all within Coinbase’s ecosystem. This means that an Agent can hold funds, initiate payments, and complete settlements without leaving Coinbase’s system.

This complete ecosystem positions Coinbase very uniquely in AI payments. Visa has a payment network but lacks Agent wallets, Stripe has a merchant system but no proprietary chain, and Circle has stablecoins but no network layer. Coinbase is one of the few companies that has consolidated multiple aspects of Agent payments within its control.

The risks and advantages of this layout are both evident. The advantage is a seamless experience without friction across systems. The risk is that if any one component fails, the entire system will be affected. Coinbase reported a net loss of $359 million in the second quarter of 2026, a figure that reminds us that the cost of this layout is not low.

How the Dark Horse Position Was Formed

Coinbase becoming the largest operator of Agent payments has a somewhat "serendipitous" aspect to it.

Initially, Coinbase created the Base chain not specifically for Agent payments, but to expand its on-chain ecosystem. The x402 protocol was originally proposed as an internet-native machine payment standard, not specifically designed for Agents. Agentic Wallets were only launched in February 2026.

However, as the Agent economy began to explode in growth, Coinbase found itself positioned in multiple areas ahead of time. Base happened to be one of the chains with the lowest transaction costs, most suitable for high-frequency micro transactions by Agents. The x402 protocol happened to be the standard suitable for machine-to-machine payments. Agentic Wallets happened to fill the gap of Agents needing their own financial identity.

These "happenstances" are backed by Coinbase’s continuous investment in on-chain infrastructure over the past few years. It did not wait until the explosion of Agent payments to act; it began laying the groundwork for wallets, chains, and protocols when the Agent economy had not yet formed.

This observation provides a general insight into understanding the AI payments track. When a new infrastructure demand arises, the one that truly reaps the benefits is not necessarily the one that reacts the fastest, but the one that has accumulated the most at the foundational level.

    A Final Note

Currently, the narrative around the AI payments track mainly revolves around three issues: whose protocol will become the standard, which payment track will prevail, and how card payments and stablecoins will integrate.

Coinbase’s data offers a different perspective. While the debate over protocols and tracks continues, actual Agent payments have quietly begun to run, and they are running on Coinbase’s chain.

This phenomenon indicates that the implementation of AI payments may not entirely depend on "whose standard is more reasonable," but rather on "whose infrastructure is already prepared." Protocols can gradually establish standards, but the demand for Agent transactions will not wait for the standards to be finalized. Whoever can provide usable infrastructure immediately when the demand arises will be the first to reap the benefits.

What Coinbase has gained is this wave. It may not be the ultimate winner in AI payments, but it is currently the one running at the forefront.
