UN and Google Launch AI Data Platform to Support Intelligent Agent Queries

The United Nations and Google have launched the UN System Data Commons, replacing the former UNData portal. This platform is built on Google’s open-source Data Commons and supports natural language search and Model Context Protocol (MCP), enabling AI agents to directly query authoritative statistical data from multiple UN agencies and trace back to original sources. A total of 26 UN entities have committed to participate, with data from nearly 20 entities available at launch, aiming to include 80% of the UN system's statistical datasets by 2027. Google.org has provided $2 million in funding and technical support for core infrastructure. UNICEF tested six large models on their responses to global development indicators, finding an average accuracy of only 21.2% across over 133,000 responses, with about three-fifths failing to provide usable numbers. When the same model answered again two days later, only about half of the numbers were consistent.
