US to Release September PPI and Retail Sales Data Tonight
On October 15, at 20:30 Beijing time, the United States will release the September PPI and retail sales data. The market expects the overall PPI for September to rise by 0.6% month-on-month, higher than August's 0.4%; the core PPI is expected to increase by 0.3% month-on-month. If the data meets expectations, it indicates increasing price pressures at the production level in the US. Bill Adams, Chief US Economist at Fifth Third Commercial Bank, believes that a strong PPI performance could increase the likelihood of a Federal Reserve rate hike in October. Energy costs may continue to drive the PPI, as recent high prices for crude oil, gasoline, and diesel affect transportation, logistics, and manufacturing, which are sensitive to energy costs. Therefore, the impact on the production side is usually more direct than on consumer prices. If the overall PPI for September reaches 0.6% month-on-month, it suggests that rising energy costs are continuing to transmit to businesses. Investors are focused on the extent to which energy prices are transmitted to the production side and their impact on the resilience of US consumption, which could alter the pricing of Federal Reserve rate hikes and cause market fluctuations.
