World Bank to Cease Lending to China by 2031

The Board of Directors of the World Bank has introduced a new partnership program with China for the years 2026-2031, which involves a reduction in funding for the country. The reason for this change is that the People's Republic of China no longer requires large-scale development loans. The Bank plans to leverage China's expertise in ecology, water resources, and agriculture. Funding from Beijing has decreased from $2.4 billion in 2017 to $750 million in 2025. By 2031, the total amount of lending will be capped at less than $2 billion. China is the fifth-largest donor to the International Development Association, although it received concessional financing from it until 1999. Calls to cease lending to China have been voiced by the United States since the first presidential term of Donald Trump. Following the World Bank's decision, Washington is expected to urge other multilateral banks to reconsider their lending policies towards Beijing. The West's withdrawal from China will cost more than $23 trillion.
