FBI Seizes Crypto Tied to Hamas Financing Network

  1. The key market signal is how directly law enforcement can act across stablecoins, exchange accounts, and on-chain infrastructure when court orders are in place. The reported involvement of Tether and Binance points to continued pressure on centralized crypto rails in compliance cases.
  2. Another point to watch is whether enforcement focus expands toward cross-chain bridges, over-the-counter brokers, and suspected mule-account networks, which the FBI said were used as the funding routes evolved.
  3. For market participants, the practical issue is not the seizure size but the reach of tracing and asset-control tools when funds move across wallets, chains, and service providers.

The FBI said it tracked and seized more than $560,000 in cryptocurrency allegedly intended for Hamas through an investigation that unfolded in March, June, and October 2025 and relied on blockchain analysis, human intelligence, and court orders.

According to the FBI, the investigation found that multiple donation addresses linked to Hamas’s military wing, the Al Qassam Brigades, used the same gas wallet to pay transaction fees. Investigators said funds then moved through Reactor to operational wallets and related infrastructure before being targeted in seizure actions.

The agency said the network’s methods changed over time. In June 2025, the funds allegedly moved through new addresses, accounts, over-the-counter brokers, and suspected mule accounts. By October, the network had shifted to disposable donation wallets and cross-chain bridges, suggesting an effort to make tracing and disruption more difficult.

The reported enforcement steps also involved major crypto service providers. Court orders required Tether to destroy USDT held at specified addresses and reissue equivalent assets to law enforcement wallets. Binance was instructed to transfer balances from three accounts, according to the disclosure.

While the amount seized is modest relative to the broader crypto market, the case centers on compliance and enforcement mechanics rather than market scale. The available information does not disclose full wallet details, the exact chain breakdown of the assets, or whether additional related accounts remain under investigation.

Why It Matters

The case highlights how crypto enforcement increasingly spans both public blockchains and centralized intermediaries. It also shows that stablecoin issuers and exchanges can become direct execution points for court-ordered actions, especially in cases tied to sanctions, terrorism financing, or national security.

It also underscores a broader shift in crypto compliance: illicit networks may keep changing wallets and routing methods, but investigators are targeting the service layers that can freeze, reissue, or transfer assets once attribution is established. That has implications for how exchanges, issuers, and other infrastructure providers manage monitoring and legal-response capabilities.
