How to Log In to MetaMask: Unlock, Troubleshooting and Recovery (2026)

By: WEEX|2026/07/14 12:42:37

If you are searching for a "MetaMask login" page, here is the single most important thing to know first: MetaMask has no web login and no online account. There is no metamask.com/login, no email-and-password sign-in, and no server that stores your wallet. MetaMask is a browser extension and a mobile app, and "logging in" simply means unlocking a wallet that already lives on your own device. Any website that asks you to "log in to MetaMask" with an email and password is a phishing site. This guide explains what login really means, how to unlock your wallet, what to do when you cannot get in, and how to recover safely.

What "logging in to MetaMask" actually means

MetaMask stores an encrypted vault locally, inside your browser profile or your phone. When you open it, you enter a local password that decrypts that vault. This password is set per install, is never transmitted anywhere, and cannot be recovered or reset by MetaMask. Because the wallet is self-custodial, there is no support team that can "log you back in" — the only master key is your Secret Recovery Phrase (SRP).

The ways to unlock or sign in

  • Local password (default). The standard way to open your wallet on any install.
  • Biometric unlock (mobile). Face ID or fingerprint can be layered on top of the password on the app.
  • Social login (new since August 26, 2025). You can create or open a wallet by signing in with Google, Apple, or Telegram plus a unique password. An SRP is still generated under the hood using multi-party computation, so no single party — not MetaMask, Google, or Apple — can reconstruct your key. It remains fully self-custodial, and the password is now the single point of failure.

Using your wallet on a second device

MetaMask's old QR-based "Sync with Mobile" feature has reportedly been discontinued, so you cannot mirror a wallet by scanning a code anymore. To use the same wallet on a second device, you have two verified paths: import your Secret Recovery Phrase on the new device, or, if you created the wallet with social login, sign in with the same social account and password — which restores the same wallet. Social login is the closest thing MetaMask offers to cross-device sync. Note that there is no live, real-time state sync between devices for a traditional SRP-based wallet.

Troubleshooting: "I can't log in"

Most "can't log in" cases are an invalid password error rather than a lost wallet. MetaMask's own fixes, in order:

  • Type the password slowly, one character at a time — browser lag can drop keystrokes.
  • Paste it from a text file to rule out typos.
  • Update the extension to the latest version.
  • Restart the browser, or force-close and reopen the mobile app.
  • Restart the device itself.

If the password is genuinely forgotten, tap "Forgot password" and re-import the wallet with your Secret Recovery Phrase, then set a new password. On a fresh install, choose "Import using Secret Recovery Phrase." The SRP is 12 words by default (wallets imported from elsewhere may be 24). One hard limit to accept up front: if you lose both the SRP and the password, the wallet and its funds are unrecoverable — there is no reset and no support override.

Security: how to avoid login scams

The "login" and "recovery" SERP is heavily targeted by phishing. Memorize MetaMask's three iron rules, stated verbatim:

  • "We will never ask for your Secret Recovery Phrase." If anyone asks for it, they are trying to scam you.
  • "MetaMask does not have a phone number for support, and will never ask you to get on a phone call."
  • "we will never DM you offering support."

Practical checks: the only official domains are metamask.io and support.metamask.io — type them yourself rather than following links. Never enter your Secret Recovery Phrase on any website; no legitimate MetaMask page will ever ask for it. On mobile, confirm the app's developer name and the 10M+ downloads / 50K+ ratings before installing to avoid clones. For official unlock and password help, see support.metamask.io.

FAQ

Why can't I log in to MetaMask? Usually an invalid-password error. Try the slow-typing, paste-from-file, update, and restart steps above before assuming the wallet is lost.

I forgot my password — what now? Use "Forgot password" and re-import with your 12-word Secret Recovery Phrase, then set a new password.

What is the Secret Recovery Phrase? A 12-word master key generated at setup that can restore your entire wallet. It is not your password and not a single private key. Keep it offline; never type it into a website.

Can I sync my phone and PC? Not via the old QR sync. Import the SRP on the second device, or log in with the same social account if you used social login.

If I log out, do I lose my funds? No. Locking or logging out only closes the local session. Your assets live on the blockchain and are restored whenever you unlock again — or re-import with your SRP.

From exchange to self-custody

Once your wallet is set up, you will want crypto to hold in it. A common, guide-shaped route is to buy on an exchange and then send it to MetaMask for self-custody.
