72% of US Consumers Expect Inflation to Outpace Income Growth
The sentiment among American consumers has cooled again. The preliminary consumer sentiment index for August fell to 51.0, a decrease of 7.6% from the previous month, and only 8% of consumers believe that income growth will outpace inflation. According to the University of Michigan's consumer survey, the preliminary results for August show a consumer sentiment index of 51.0, which is 7.6% lower than July's 55.2 and down 12.4% compared to 58.2 in August of last year. Among all consumers, only 8% expect income growth to exceed inflation over the next year, a decrease from 18% in December 2024. According to CryptoBriefing, about 72% of American consumers anticipate that inflation will surpass income growth. The consumer sentiment index is a monthly survey that reflects households' current financial conditions and future economic trends; a lower index indicates a worsening perception of consumption and economic conditions. The current economic situation index stands at 51.8, down 5.5% from the previous month's 54.8, while the consumer expectations index is at 50.6, down 8.7% from 55.4 last month. The expected inflation rate for the next year rose from 4.2% in July to 4.3% in August, while long-term expected inflation remains steady at 3.3% for the third consecutive month. The University of Michigan is set to release the final consumer survey results for August at 11 PM KST on August 28.
