A Brewery Discovers How to Harness the Heat from Bitcoin Miners

  • The system generates about 2,000 AUD monthly in bitcoin and reduces the plant's energy costs.
  • The equipment operates solely on surplus solar energy and reuses heat close to 90 °C.

Hawkesbury Brewing Co., a craft brewery located in Lisarow, Australia, announced on July 28, 2026, a system that combines solar energy and Bitcoin mining to utilize the heat generated by computing equipment in its production process. The company installed 16 miners that operate on surplus solar electricity and use the residual heat to warm the water needed for brewing beer and cleaning its facilities.

The project arose from a common issue among companies with their own solar generation: producing more electricity than they can consume during certain hours of the day. According to Adam Neale, operations manager at Hawkesbury Brewing, the company had invested in solar panels, but selling the surplus to the grid offered limited returns while the brewery continued to need large amounts of hot water for its operations.

"Every brewery needs heat; we just found a more efficient way to produce it," Neale noted.

The mining equipment was installed in a liquid immersion cooling system, where it remains submerged in a non-conductive liquid that absorbs the heat generated during operation. The liquid reaches temperatures close to 90 degrees Celsius and subsequently transfers that thermal energy to the water used in beer production and the daily cleaning of the plant.

In addition to energy savings, the installation generates income through Bitcoin mining. According to the brewery, the 16 units produce approximately 2,000 Australian dollars per month in bitcoin (BTC), an amount that nearly covers its electricity bill.

The system activates only when there is surplus solar energy, so the company assures that it does not require additional electricity from the grid to operate and avoids adding emissions associated with energy consumption. From the brewery's perspective, the main goal is not to become a mining company but to take advantage of a source of energy that previously had low value.

This initiative is part of a trend known as mining heat recovery, where the equipment used for Bitcoin mining is integrated with processes that require thermal energy. The devices convert almost all the electricity consumed into heat, allowing part of that energy to be captured through appropriate cooling systems and used in other activities.

It is worth noting that the brewery's case adds to other projects seeking to harness the heat generated by Bitcoin mining. In Canada, the company MintGreen developed its "digital boiler" systems, based on immersion cooling mining, to supply heat to industrial facilities and urban heating networks in Vancouver.

As reported by CriptoNoticias, the company also applied this technology at the Shelter Point distillery, where it uses the recovered heat in processes related to whisky production.

Additionally, in Nordic countries, companies like Genesis Mining and MARA have promoted projects that utilize the heat from mining equipment for greenhouses, building heating, and other productive activities that require a constant thermal supply.

However, the model depends on several factors to be profitable. In this scenario, the availability of surplus renewable energy, the price of bitcoin, the cost of equipment, and the existence of real heat demand determine the viability of each installation. Thermal recovery provides benefits when it allows for the substitution of other energy sources, not simply when it adds a new electrical load.

For now, Hawkesbury Brewing demonstrates a new application of Bitcoin mining: using its equipment as flexible loads that monetize renewable surpluses and recover heat for industrial processes. With the growth of distributed solar energy, this type of integration could expand in industries with a permanent thermal demand.
