Anthropic Warns AI May Enter Self-Accelerating Phase
In an updated IPO prospectus on November 2, Anthropic warned that AI may soon cross a critical threshold related to "recursive self-improvement" (RSI), leading to a significant acceleration in AI research and development. Historically, there have been instances where significant acceleration in R&D progress went unnoticed until after the acceleration occurred. Claude is currently involved in writing code, running experiments, and processing training data, helping to develop stronger next-generation models, which in turn can accelerate subsequent R&D, creating a self-reinforcing cycle. Anthropic pointed out that there are two scenarios for reaching this critical threshold: first, AI can perform the work of an entire AI research team at a comparable cost; second, the pace of AI technological advancement doubles, compressing progress that would normally take two years into one year. As AI delves deeper into its own R&D, model capabilities may grow faster than updates to safety assessments, alignment research, and protective measures. Anthropic has not yet identified any existing models that have reached this level, and this warning is primarily based on internal estimates and predictions for future models. They are considering revising safety policies to ensure that critical R&D processes remain supervised and controlled by humans.
