Argentina's Central Bank Will Not Advance Cryptocurrency Integration into the Banking System in the Next Two Years

Juan Curutchet, head of financial and foreign exchange institution regulation at the Central Bank of Argentina (BCRA), stated that there will be no push for the integration of cryptocurrencies and digital assets into banks and payment channels in the next two years. The ban on cryptocurrency services for financial institutions, enacted in 2022, will remain in effect. Curutchet pointed out that Argentina's current economic vulnerability is insufficient to support the advancement of such measures, and whether the ban will be lifted in the future depends on the economic situation, with discussions on the topic possibly occurring during the second term of Milei. Despite the ongoing ban, the Argentine banking group is advancing a stablecoin project through an independent entity for programmable currency, treasury management, payments triggered by on-chain events, and collateral credit management. In the 12 months ending June 30, the trading value of cryptocurrencies in Argentina exceeded $88.5 billion, making it the second-largest cryptocurrency hub in Latin America.
