Bitcoin Core Ends Development of HWI for Hardware Wallets
Bitcoin Core will cease development of the HWI (Hardware Wallet Interface), which connects hardware wallets to the software. The decision was announced by developer Ava 'achow101' Chow. Chow mentioned a lack of time and motivation to continue the project, which has been an individual effort despite being under Bitcoin Core. The plan is to complete the MuSig2 feature, a multi-signature protocol, and enter a 'minimum maintenance mode' until a replacement appears. Chow highlighted that the limitations of the Python language hinder development, preventing the creation of deterministic builds. The repository will be archived, and the BHWI, developed in Rust, is considered a promising successor, already offering support for Ledger, Coldcard, Jade, and BitBox02 wallets. Support for OneKey and Cypherock X1 devices will be discontinued, along with functionalities for Trezor and support for Silent Payments. The version with support for MuSig2 will likely be the final one, with minimal changes thereafter to maintain automated testing.
