Block Announces Open Source AI-Powered Chat "Buzz" to Compete with Slack and GitHub

By: rootdata|2026/07/24 05:00:29

Block Inc., led by Jack Dorsey, has launched a new group chat platform called Buzz, designed for collaboration between humans and AI agents in the same space.

The platform is aimed at reducing dependency on tools like Slack and GitHub, developed for teams and agents of all sizes. It is decentralized, self-sovereign, and open source, without reliance on specific models.

A New Collaboration Foundation Where Humans and AI Work Equally
Buzz integrates chat, threads, voice calls, and file sharing, along with code repositories and automated workflows into a single interface. Unlike existing tools that treat AI as a mere assistant waiting for commands, Buzz incorporates AI as a "team member" with a unique encrypted ID and clear permissions.

AI agents can autonomously participate in conversations and directly perform tasks such as code reviews, workflow approvals, and collaborative project work. The non-model-dependent approach allows for the flexible integration of various large language models (LLMs) such as Anthropic's Claude Code, OpenAI's Codex, and Block's own Goose.

Ensuring Transparency and Data Sovereignty with the Nostr Protocol

At its core, Buzz employs the decentralized communication protocol Nostr, supported by Dorsey.

Unique key pairs are used to identify participating humans and AI, with permissions and action histories transparently recorded as a hash chain audit trail. This ensures that all operations, from message sending to code changes and approval processes, are traceable as a tamper-proof single log.

Additionally, the tool is provided as open source under the Apache 2.0 license, with the code available on GitHub. Companies can not only use the managed version provided by Block but also self-host it on their infrastructure to fully control security and data. Currently, desktop applications for macOS, Windows, and Linux (version 0.4.21) are being distributed.

Reconstructing Development Structures and Operational Models in the AI Era

Block has already been utilizing Buzz for several months, with much of the tool's development and UI design being carried out alongside AI agents.
(UI design refers to...
Building visual elements and user experience, such as text, buttons, and charts seen on exchanges and wallets, in an intuitive and understandable manner.)

By eliminating bottlenecks caused by traditional tool management and consolidating incident response, task management, code fixes, and related discussions into a single thread, efficient context handover is achieved.

After undergoing a 40% organizational restructuring, Block is transitioning to an AI-centric corporate structure, and Buzz is not just a chat app but a crucial product that integrates multiple internal tools to realize "the future workplace environment where AI and humans work together."
