BOJ Leaves Open Possibility of Early Rate Hike

The Bank of Japan (BOJ) is keeping the possibility of an early interest rate hike open as the value of the yen has fallen to its lowest level in 40 years. According to Bloomberg on the 22nd, BOJ officials stated that they have not set a six-month timeframe for the rate hike cycle and could move more quickly depending on economic and price conditions. After freezing the benchmark interest rate at 1.0% per annum during this month's monetary policy meeting, the BOJ is expected to consider an additional hike around December. However, there is a prevailing opinion within the BOJ that there is no predetermined path for rate increases. The dollar-yen exchange rate surpassed 163 yen per dollar on the 22nd, indicating a decline in the yen's value. Japan's Finance Minister warned that appropriate measures would be taken if necessary regarding excessive movements in the foreign exchange market, but the market assesses that it would be difficult to reverse the yen's weakness solely through foreign exchange market intervention. The BOJ plans to assess wages, prices, and yen flows at each meeting. Attention is focused on how strongly the BOJ will warn about price risks due to the yen's weakness at the upcoming meeting on the 30th and 31st.
