A federal judge in Miami, Florida, sentenced 20-year-old Canadian man Trenton Johnston to 25 months in prison. Johnston admitted to participating in a money laundering conspiracy and surrendered approximately $3.8 million in stolen cryptocurrency. He began his criminal activities in January 2024 (when he was 17 years old), impersonating Google tech support and representatives of cryptocurrency companies to trick victims into providing wallet access codes. In one case, he and an accomplice defrauded a victim in California out of 185 bitcoins (worth about $13 million at the time). Johnston used the proceeds to purchase luxury items, including a Lamborghini Aventador SVJ, two BMWs, jewelry, and private jet rentals. Johnston has agreed to be deported back to Canada and is still facing drug possession charges in Florida.
