Caroline Ellison Joins AI Safety Charity

Caroline Ellison, the former CEO of Alameda Research, a subsidiary of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX, has joined the nonprofit organization "Manifund," which supports the safety of AI (artificial intelligence) and effective altruism.

According to Austin Chen, co-founder of the organization, Ellison was officially hired in August after a trial period in July.

Background of Her Activities Under a Pseudonym and Joining Manifund

During her trial period, she operated under the pseudonym "Carol" and did not reveal her identity in publicly available information. Her main roles included improving funding systems and enhancing efforts towards AI safety.

Chen acknowledged Ellison's criminal history and the significant financial damage caused by FTX's collapse, but stated, "I believe in rehabilitation," explaining that her hiring was to provide her with an opportunity to contribute to society, citing her acceptance of guilt, cooperation with investigations, and completion of her sentence.

Background of FTX's Collapse and Legal Proceedings

In December 2022, Ellison pleaded guilty to charges of fraud and conspiracy related to FTX's collapse and fully cooperated with U.S. prosecutors, testifying against founder Sam Bankman-Fried in his criminal trial.

As a result, Bankman-Fried was sentenced to 25 years in prison, while Ellison received a 2-year sentence, taking into account her extensive cooperation with prosecutors. She was incarcerated in November 2024 and released early in January 2026.

Reactions to Her Career Reconstruction and Her Thoughts

Her recent hiring, which marks a reconstruction of her career after release, has attracted public attention due to her name being strongly associated with FTX's massive collapse.

However, Manifund defended the decision as a reasonable judgment based on her acceptance of responsibility, completion of her sentence, and actual job performance. Ellison herself expressed gratitude to Chen and the organization for evaluating her current abilities and achievements, while apologizing for her past actions.

Legal Settlements and Future Prospects

This development comes as issues surrounding individual legal responsibilities are nearing resolution, while court battles and bankruptcy proceedings related to FTX continue.

As personal sanctions, including the conclusion of civil lawsuits by the CFTC (U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission) and trading bans, are being finalized, Ellison is taking a new step in the field of nonprofit charitable activities, distinct from the financial industry.
