Consensys Spins Off MetaMask as Independent Entity, Joe Lubin Appointed CEO

Ethereum software company Consensys has announced the spin-off of its flagship wallet MetaMask into an independent entity, with founder Joe Lubin taking on the role of CEO. The original Consensys has been rebranded to focus on institutional protocols and Ethereum software, led by executive Mike Kriak. The reason for the spin-off is that the value accumulation of MetaMask's consumer business far exceeds that of other business units. MetaMask has expanded from an Ethereum wallet to a platform resembling a crypto version of a new bank, introducing a main account feature that supports multiple assets and a Mastercard debit card for spending, along with diverse revenue sources such as perpetual contracts and prediction markets. Lubin did not disclose a timeline for an IPO, but analysts believe that MetaMask may seek to go public as early as the beginning of 2027, with a reduced willingness to issue tokens in the current regulatory environment.
